Q: First, tell us how you feel right now, eleven, twelve days after the injury?

A: Well, it is much easier now, at this moment. I feel much better, in my head, now it’s time to forget what happened. I will spend the near future without football, but I will have more time for my family.

Q: Could you please describe what happened? The tackle?

A: In that moment, lying on the floor, I looked at my leg, couldn’t believe what I was seeing, and turned my head the other way. I felt nervous, very scared, and spent all the way to the hospital in great pain.

Q: We have heard that the Arsenal medical staff, and especially the physio Gary Lewin reacted greatly, and that Gilberto also helped a lot.

A: Yeah, they immobilized my foot, and Gilberto came over to translalte and tell me what to do. I could barely understand even him, my head was everywhere, I was barely holding on. I think it all went the way it should have, now.

Q: The pain? Was it unbearable?

A: I can’t really tell. Sure, the pain was huge, but it’s the panic, fear, and nervousness that I felt the most. I can’t really recall the pain itself.

Q: Some players have said that you were just too quick, and that you moved the ball too fast for the other player to catch it?

A: I touched the ball away, but didn’t have the time to move my foot away, and his studs were already there. I definitely didn’t expect what happened to actually happen that way. Everybody says it looked really ugly, and they tell me not to watch it – so I don’t watch it. I wish I had my leg in the air, and not planted on the ground. It would have been a foul, but not an injury.

Q: The pictures have been printed in most newspapers around the world. Have you seen any of them?

A: No, I haven’t really. I’ve seen one picture of me lying on the ground, but all you could see is my back, and my head turned the other way. Generally, I don’t really watch football as much as i should. I just watch Arsenal games.

Q: Have you read what Kaka said? He asked for more protection from the referees, and claimed that the top players are constantly handled with dangerous tackles.

A: Yes, I heard that, and I think he’s absolutely right. If that tackle happened to somebody else, I’d still feel very sorry for the player. We’ll see what will happen in the future.

Q: Do you think that football has become such a rough sport, and how much responsibility lies with the managers, and club officials, who stress the importance of winning?

A: Well, everybody wants to win, that’s normal, and things like this happen.

Q: What are you plans now? Rehabilitation? How long will you be wearing the plaster cast?

A: Four weeks, probably. The club will organize something concerning my physical rehabilitation, and it should all start in about month and ten days. I’ll start the rehabilitation process in Brazil, with the doctor who worked wit Ronaldo, Ronaldinho,, and Roberto Carlos.

Q: I see you’re in a rather good mood.

A: well, yes. I’ve been spending a lot of time with my family and friends, and that has helped me a lot. Things like this happen, this time it happened to me. I have to move on.

Q: The NoTW interview with you? Is it real?

A: I guarantee you that it’s completely made up. This here is my first interview after the injury. I asked them to clarify that it was not an interview with me, and they did, so it’s okay now.

Q: Here, in Croatia, your injury was the most important news. Have you been harassed by the media while you were in the hospital?

A: Well, it was difficult sometimes, because i needed peace and quiet most of all. I understand them, but it was difficult for me, because something bad had happened. You have to understand me, as well.

Q: What’s the prognosis?

A: It depends. Could be six, months, could be nine, could be a whole year. There is a long way to go, and it will be important to be mentally prepared to get back in to the game, and not just physically.

Arsenal striker Eduardo could have been coming to terms with his career being over had it not been for Gary Lewin.

The Daily Mail can reveal the problems the Gunners physiotherapist had to overcome after Martin Taylor’s lunge smashed the Brazilian’s leg.

As Lewin raced on to the St Andrew’s pitch with Eduardo in agony he:

• Quickly realised the next 45 minutes would determine the striker’s future.
• Was immediately faced with a player in shock and rambling in his native Portuguese.
• Had to summon Brazilian Gilberto from the bench to act as a translator.
• Realised that if the striker was not operated on immediately there was a serious risk of infection because his bone had punctured his skin.

Arsenal are confident that Eduardo - who was released from hospital on Wednesday - will play again. The club have received 12,500 e-mails of support for the Croatia striker from across the world. Messages can be sent to Eduardo via e-mail on www.arsenal.com and the club will give them to the player to aid him on his long road to recovery.
Eduardo’s wife spoke of her shock as she saw her husband’s horrific injury on television while she was doing the housework.

His wife, Andrea, said: “My Eduardo won’t surrender. The surgery went OK and it is important to focus on his rehabilitation now. When I visited him in Birmingham he was just waking up from the operation.

“He was, as we all were, stressed and wanted to know why this happened to him, but he was quite calm. “We still have not recovered from it and the entire family is in stress. He immediately asked for his daughter Lorena. “I was doing ordinary home chores when following the match on TV. I was soon losing all my strength after crying so much.”

Martin Taylor has broken his silence over the tackle on Eduardo da Silva that left the Arsenal striker with a broken leg.

Taylor was sent off after mis-timing a challenge in the early stages of Birmingham’s 2-2 draw with The Gunners on Saturday.

The Blues defender has stressed that he did not intend to hurt the Croatian, and has revealed details of his visit to see Eduardo in hospital.

Taylor also insists nothing would give him greater pleasure than to see Eduardo back scoring goals for Arsenal.

“I will be really happy on the day when I see he is back in the Arsenal and

Croatia line-up and when he is scoring goals again,” Taylor told The Independent.

“The injury was terrible enough. When he gets back to fitness and he puts the ball in the net for Arsenal for the first time, we will all feel much better.

“People will be able to see that accidents like these are the nature of football and you can recover from it.

“I went to see him on Saturday but, unfortunately, he was still recovering from an operation, so first thing on Sunday morning I went to the hospital.”

Worried

Taylor admits he was worried how the striker would react to his visit, especially as he had heard the magnitude of injuries such as Eduardo’s only start to dawn on the patient after they undergo surgery.

He explained: “I was mindful of this and I thought maybe he wouldn’t want to see me, which would have been fair enough because of the trauma.

“Although there was a language barrier, I just said that I didn’t mean him any harm at all and that I hoped he made a quick recovery.

“He took it on board and nodded. I was just really glad we could communicate.

“He is obviously a really strong man. Since then, I have read in the papers that he would be happy for me to visit him. That’s something I’d like to do.”

Speaking for the first time after the incident, the summer signing from Dinamo Zagreb ruled himself out of the rest of the season and Euro 2008 in the summer however he added that he is ‘determined to overcome this injury’.

“I don’t remember the incident very well and it is not something that I want to see again on television or in the newspapers,” said Eduardo.

“All I remember is that when I fell, I looked down at my foot and it had turned the other way. The rest is just a blank. It was an unfortunate situation but these things can happen in football.

“I am unsure at the moment of the extent of the injury and how long I will be out of action for but I know that I won’t be able to play for Arsenal for the rest of the season or be ready in time for the Euros this summer.

“But I’m not worried about that. My concentration and determination is on making as quick a recovery as possible. I am determined to overcome this injury.

“I would like to thank the medical team here at Arsenal for their efforts as well as the staff at Selly Oak Hospital who carried out the operation on Saturday night. Everyone there made me feel as comfortable as possible.

“I would also like to say how touched I am by the many messages of support I have received and to be surrounded by my loved ones at this time.”
